Steve graduated from West Stanly High School in 1978 after completing various woodworking and carpentry classes that were offered in high school. In 1978, Steve competed in VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) Carpentry Contest, finishing first place in the district contest. He then went on to the state contest in Asheville, NC and finished first place, sending him to the national level contest where he finished in the top ten.
Steve's construction career began in 1978 with George A. Little Construction Company in Albemarle, NC. In 1983, Steve started Helms Builders, specializing in framing and interior and exterior trim. Since then, the company has grown to provide complete residential and commercial building and renovation services.
