Lewis R. Smoot, Sr., began working with his father and founder of the business, Sherman R. Smoot, at age 13 as a water boy on Smoot Construction jobsites. In 1956, Lewis earned a degree in Construction Management from Michigan State University and subsequently completed two years working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
