The roof curb is designed to support the weight of the unit, and to offer a means for contractors to connect the supply & return air duct work. Can be designed to add visual impact or it can be designed to disappear into the overhead building environment. A grille is a perforated cover for an air duct (used for heating, cooling, or ventilation, or a combination thereof).
A register differs from a grille in that a damper is included. However, in practice, the terms "grille", "register", and "return" are often used interchangeably, and care must be taken to determine the meaning of the term used. Exhaust fans work by sucking hot or humid air out of a small, localized area, allowing fresh air to enter from elsewhere (perhaps a doorway or vent) in order to replace it.
