Handrails for the stairwell sounded like one of the least interesting design choices for the new house. So far, however, the birch rails made by Brokenpress have consistently drawn some of the most positive comments from guests. They are simple but superb in a way that I think is reflective of this shop’s signature style. I’ve got bookcases from Brokenpress coming soon and can only hope that they match the quality of these excellent stair rails.

Alex is known for his artistic eye and next level craftsmanship. We commissioned him to build a custom hanging cabinet for an oddly located spot in our kitchen. After an initial consultation and measurement, Alex provided a written estimate and drawing of the cabinet. We approved it without revisions.
On the day of the install we were super excited by the work and attention to detail. He was able to beautifully match the finish, color and tone of our beloved 15 year old cherry cabinetry. Install required hanging the cabinet in tight quarters. He and his team mate had it installed in no time and

Great quality, excellent service! I hired Broken Press Design for a custom rack build, with my hundreds of LPs in mind. Alex and his assistant, delivered and sat everything up in one afternoon. The racks are beautiful, and now my record collection is no longer boxed up in different locations! We are fortunate to have a local furniture manufacturer here in Chicago! Check these folks out!

I have been following Brokenpress on Instagram for a long time. We dreamed of "one day" when we'd have a special place for our vinyl, important books, and our kitchen stuff. Our dreams were exceeded at every level. The shelves are truly made by an artist. The quality is incredible. Delivery and installation was easy. Literally cried at how beautiful everything turned out (floating shelves and vinyl console). Could not be happier. Do it.

Alex worked with us to create our floating shelves in a style and price point that was comfortable for us, resulting in the beautiful, dark wooden shelves of our dreams. I got quotes from several different custom furniture shops in Chicago and Alex was by far the best in terms of quality, professionalism, and responsiveness. He and his team did an impeccable job of making my chicken scratch drawing and idea for my window seat a reality. Not to mention the hard work it took him and his team to move this mammoth piece up my stairs and with masks on thanks to the pandemic! I love, love, love my new 8' long bench and look forward to adding a custom cushion to it soon to complete it!

After becoming frustrated with flimsy Ikea furniture, we decided to invest in a wood credenza that would last a lifetime. To our dismay, none of the popular mid-range "Instagram-influencer" stores (West Elm, etc.) carried real wood furniture. After looking at the higher-end places that use real wood (Room & Board), we came across Brokenpress Design+Fabrication and realized we could have Alex design us custom piece of furniture that would be made locally, crafted by a person with a face, and priced competitively. There's only one place to go in Chicago for super high-quality, totally badass custom mid-century modern furniture. Alex designed and made me a stereo / vinyl storage credenza. He customized the piece to the size of my stereo and my vinyl collection. His work is SO beautifully built (look at that walnut in pic #1!).
I liked Brokenpress's work and care so much that i asked Alex to design a second credenza with center storage drawers, since i had fewer components (see Pic #2, again in walnut).
