As a kid, Craig climbed and pollinated date palms on this family farm in California's Coachella Valley. His appreciation of trees grew as he later worked with an uncle on a native tree nursery in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In 2009, he moved to Chapel Hill, started a family, and returned to tree work after studies at UCLA and Harvard.
That return was prompted by the pleasure he felt when, taking a break from the books, he climbed a big red oak to saw off the limbs shading out his tomatoes. The forester deals with forests; the treeist deals with trees - specific ones and modest groups thereof.

Services
We value ourselves in giving sound advice about trees, not scaring folks into unnecessary services. Our skills: communication, training, pruning, cabling, bracing, hazard tree mitigation, climbing & crane assisted removals, bucket truck operations, tree health and risk assessments, and advising about all things tree related.
At a minimum you'll find: Coffee, Snacks & Conversations to be had with owners Craig Nishimoto & David Ricks. Homeowners & tree workers: bring in your old chainsaw and we'll show you how to sharpen it. Show us a picture or describe a tricky tree and we may be able to loan you some tools to make the job safer, easier and/or more fun(!).
You would like a general assessment, a formal risk assessment (verbal or written), or arborist's advice about your property. You are realtor or you are selling your home and you would like a risk assessment and/or work done in preparation for the sale of a house. You are an individual, business, property manager, realtor, HOA, etc and you have a specific concern or a specific tree (or several trees) that you want looked at.
In 2019 we began finding emerald ash borer (EAB) infestations in Chapel Hill, Durham, and Chatham County. EAB will do here what it has done elsewhere since its discovery in Michigan in 2002. Whether the ash trees in your neighborhood are plentiful or few and far between, it doesn't matter. EAB is projected to kill them all.

I’ve used various tree services over the years and they are by far the most professional and kindest. They took down two 70ft+ trees that were right beside the house and I didn’t worry at all. Kept a clean and safe site, too. Definitely recommend them!

I first used Craig and his crew to remove several rather large trees and two smaller trees on my property. The very large crew showed up exactly on time and efficiently went to work taking down the trees. It was not an easy job as it was down a steep hill. They had to remove two sections of split rail fencing to finish the job. At the end of the day you would never have known they were there. They took great care with the surrounding trees, azaleas, camellias, and hostas.
Another time I used them to limb up crepe myrtles, trident maples, evergreens, and dogwoods. They also removed two more maples

Knowledgeable, Professional, and Easy to Work With! They not only came out to deliver free wood chips, but they helped me identify a curious plant that was growing in my back yard. I also had them come and cut down a dead hardwood for me, which they managed without damaging any other trees or shrubs in the area, all at a reasonable price. I highly recommend them!

I hired the Treeist to remove 3 large trees who had fallen during our last rain storm in mid-April. Craig and his crew could not have been more professional. The job was done within the time frame given and the crew was very efficient and courteous. At my request, they also removed an extra tree at the last minute without any fuss and at minimal additional cost. The overhaul cost was also very reasonable. I will not hesitate to contact them again, and I highly recommend them.

Craig spent a good amount of time discussing the health of the trees on our property as well as the diseased oak that led us to call him in the first place. His crew did an amazing job removing the very big red oak without harming our house or the surrounding trees. They also chipped the tree into a nearby mulched area saving us some money this fall!

We had Craig from The Treeist remove two trees in fairly difficult locations. I was concerned about damage to other trees growing around a large dead pine tree. The tree was removed with no damage to any of the other trees. They did exactly as they said they would do, cleaned up as if they were not there. Very professional and reasonably price. Will definitely use them again.
