We contacted Alternative HVAC in San Carlos based on positive reviews. On the appointment date, we received a text message from Ricardo, the tech, that he was on his way. He arrived on time, in a nice new van and was very professional and pleasant. All seemed great. Ricardo checked our thermostat setting and discussed the problem we were having with my husband - our furnace was blowing cold air. Ricardo went under the house and ran through his diagnostics. Technicians were double booked and constantly showing up late for my last 3 appointments. I even called multiple times to the office for ETA, and they said they would call me back, but nobody called back. We were already waiting for 2-hour window and plus 1- 2 hours for technicians to show up. Technicians told me that they were told to go to another site to help out other jobs. We wanted to support the local business and being their customer for 3 years, but I guess they don't care. Technicians are always nice and very through but the front office (scheduling and customer service) is horrible

The Service Tech came a little while ago. After calling in to the Tech Office, he learned that re-wiring the house was not necessary. Instead, it was a matter of reconfiguring settings. As he was about to leave I noticed the heat was still running off the furnace - emergency heat mode. So, another ten minutes and now the system is running off the heat pump. Why did I have to point this out?!!

I've been trying to install a Nest E thermostat and failing in a variety of ways. My wires weren't supplying enough power to the Nest E so I was getting error "e195". You'll find some YouTube videos about this. I corresponded with Yvonne over Yelp messaging and we agreed to schedule a call with the technicians before they came out. Just to make sure they could fix it.
In the call, their team figured out my problem and walked me through fixing it. I had to connect the brown common wire to the motherboard in the furnace. They stayed on the phone and talked me through doing

The folks at Alternative HVAC saved me from yet another cold, no-heat winter. Yvonne was incredibly helpful. She quickly returned my phone call and was so very friendly and diligent in ensuring I got an appointment. She actually followed up to be sure I was satisfied! Their technician, Nate, walks on water, too. He arrived within the scheduled timeframe and was masterful in quickly diagnosing and repairing my furnace. I can't thank him enough for his thoroughness, expertise and friendly advice. It's great to meet a true tradesman and a privilege to see him at work.

Jeff Meyer, from his first visit to estimate the work, addressing all my questions during the proposal stage, helping slot us into their busy job calendar, then following up afterward, was the best project contact I had worked with.

Completely unprofessional. I had an appt scheduled at 2:30. Called once and they said I wasn't in the system and that they would try to get a tech out to me. I called again at 2:40 to ask what the status was. I was told a tech would come out between 3:30-4. I called again at 3:30 to ask what the status was and was told sometime around 5. I asked to speak to the manager being that it was very hard for me to take time off work, the lack of communication, and how I was unhappy with the customer service being that I had to call 3-4x myself. We enjoyed a fast, clean,and installation experience of our mini-duct in an upper floor master bedroom a year ago and, after using the system, are now comfortable to post our appreciations for a job well-done!
Our existing aircon system is central, and we prefer to only cool the bedroom for the 90 degree nights. We researched mini-duct systems and contacted Mike because of the Mitsubishi system we desired. Their quote to install the system was competitive with 2 other quotes, and the 10 year extension on the warranty was a big plus for our occasional use of the system. They are in such demand

We got solar panels put in a few years back with the intention of getting electric heat for the house. Mike and his crew (includes the office folks too!) were the ONLY ones that KNEW how to install a heat pump (runs on electricity) that we could find here in the Bay Area. All the others were trying to sell us something else or talk us out of our system.
They put the system in. It needed a little time to work out the kinks, but the service guys were on the job with timely service.

Mike and his team replaced my 29 year old furnace the other day. The installers were professional and tidy. They placed drop cloths from the front door to the furnace area, Mike suggested a little larger heater and boy was he spot on. Nice to have the heat back. Alternative HVAC is a great addition to my go to list of contractors, I can trust and depend on.

We recently had issues with our HVAC system. We got recommendations for multiple vendors. Between pricing, efficiency of the office (Yvonne) scheduling the appointment and transparency regarding pricing, we decided to go with this vendor. They also had a very competitive price.
The technician (Nate) was fantastic! He immediately diagnosed the issue and did some maintenance on the unit and got everything running quickly. We were impressed that they even let us know that the technician was running 15 minutes late.

Our 80 year old gravity gas furnace was not working, after calling several HVAC companies who no longer worked on these units, I was referred Alternative HVAC in Menlo Park. Nat, their service tec, diagnosed, replaced a part, checked everything and was done in an hour, leaving a happy and warm customer.

Disclosure: they did not do any work for us. This review is for Yvonne's customer service. I found Alternative HVAC from requesting a quote thru Mitsubishi's website as we wanted that system. After initially reaching out, Yvonne failed to follow up on my request to schedule via email. I ended up calling and scheduling an appointment. I then called back a few days later to reschedule the time only to find out that "she canceled the appointment because I asked a lot of questions and she didn't think we were moving forward". After our air conditioning unit was not working and all thermostats in our home were toast, I had called Service Champions since they appeared to be the highest rating on yelp and Google. You can't always trust these ratings but please believe you can trust this one...

I reached out to Alternative HVAC Solutions using their online contact form to ask that someone come out and inspect our heating system. I received a timely email from Yvonne informing me of their first available appointment time, and that there would be a $160 charge to "schedule a Technician to perform a diagnostic".
The problem is, they advertise a "FREE estimate" in several places on their website, including right at the top of their contact form. An $160 service fee doesn't sound "FREE" to me. Complete bait and switch.

I reached out to Alternative HVAC in mid-May for a new construction project. When I spoke with Mike he appeared very knowledgeable about the Mitsubishi VRF system that was spec'd for my home.
When I subsequently followed up with Mike a few times over email, he suddenly stopped responding.
The only reason I don't give one star is because he did make a useful suggestion regarding my system size when we spoke over the phone.
But responding to customer inquiries and follow up should be a top priority.

I had called about a problem I was having with some work that was being done and just as I began to speak on the phone to explain what happened, I immediately got hung up on in the middle of my sentence, so I never had a chance to explain it. I am not sure what this meant!! :( This isn't the first time either I've had problems with them.

We were very impressed with Mike after his initial walk through and hired him over several over HVAC companies we spoke with. Unfortunately, the team he had working on our house (they were new so hopefully he will reevaluate their employment) were extremely sloppy. One day after they had left, I spent one hour cleaning up scrapes on our wood floor and scrubbing scratches off our wall. My husband also noticed that they had singed our water sprinkler pipe. Unfortunately, they never notified us of this mishap.
