Principal/Architectural Designer James studied at The College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan. He relocated to San Francisco during that city's frenzied gentrification. The Bay Area has always held a strong appreciation for its rich architectural history, and Blair's approach to design evolved to embrace this passion for quality craftsmanship, appropriate modernization, and a respect for history.
Here, in Southern California, he's vowed to "improve San Diego, one building at a time". A ziggurat is a stepped pyramid that began to appear on the horizons of a great many ancient civilizations, simultaneously. From Saqqara (Egypt) to Ziban (China).

By the time we'd purchased our home here, in Moraga, James had relocated Ziggurat to San Diego. We were familiar with James' reputation here, in the Bay Area, and what he could do with a distressed property like ours, so we really wanted his expertise and know-how. Though he was now over 500 miles away, we contacted him to see if he could work with us remotely -- and he accepted!
This small, three-bedroom, post-World War II era home had become too crowded for John and Donna Kotselas, their three boys, and Grandma Kotselas. John's dream was to recapture the feel of his birthplace in Arcadia, Greece, where there is a unique blend of Tuscan Country Villa and Neoclassical architecture.
Skip & Nadiene Hancock liked their newly purchased home, but felt that "its true character and charm needed to be brought out and freshened-up". After assessing the various elements, Ziggurat determined that these were disproportionate to the facade, as well as to one another. These were resized and reorganized to work together more harmoniously, and a main focal point was created at the entrance via a new portico.

We love working with James! We did a complete remodel of our 1600 square foot Kensington, San Diego home, taking it down to the studs and adding 600 square feet. James' ability to communicate effectively and work with our contractor was invaluable. Another wonderful perk is James' artistic gift which allowed him to produce quick renderings before our eyes enabling us to visualize the work we were trying to accomplish. Exceptionally wonderful design and vision to create our dream home. Exceeded our expectations on a regular basis. Vast knowledge about design to fit comfort and daily life while maintaining a consistent design theme. The investment was truly worth the esthetic results. We would not have been able to do this on our own. Customer service is tops! Ziggurat is an incredibly talented and creative design team. James's sketches are unbelievably well done - not to mention fast - and make it very easy for clients like me who can't visualize well to understand exactly what he's talking about. So many architects do not have an understand of architectural detailing - it's not taught in architecture schools anymore! James and his team have that down pat. He can update the ugliest box look like a high-design custom home. For me, Ziggurat created a house that looked like it was plucked out of the Italian countryside....without
