SWD serves a wide range of commercial, residential and public sector clients throughout Kansas and Missouri, with an emphasis on master planning, multi-family housing, historic restoration, healthcare, office and restaurant design.

Established in 1935 by Herbert E. Duncan Sr. of Leawood, Kansas, Stark Wilson Duncan Architects Inc is the oldest architectural firm in the greater Kansas City area and the third oldest in the state of Missouri. In 2015 Stark Wilson Duncan Architects celebrated its 80th anniversary. Herbert E. Duncan, Sr. began as a sole practitioner, creating custom designs for the first 300 homes in what is now considered old Leawood.
Stark Wilson Duncan Architects Inc has received 4 Urban Design awards, 18 Kansas City, Missouri EDC Cornerstone awards, 3 St. Louis, Missouri Landmarks Association awards, 5 Preserve Missouri awards, the Missouri Governor's Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing, the "Best of Best" Award from the U.S. H.U.D. District 7, and other awards in our pursuit of design excellence for each client.
SWD Architects designed 18 new single family homes on scattered sites throughout the city of Miami. Sustainable building techniques and materials were integrated into the design and construction of each. Originally constructed in 1918, the Mining Exchange Building is a historic renovation and adaptive reuse of a former commercial office building.
