Flavin Architects' aim is to bring nature into our client's lives by envisioning designs that rely on sculpted lines, timeless materials, and transparency to relate our buildings beautifully to their surroundings. We use advanced materials and techniques to conserve energy, water, and the natural systems on the site.
Our client asked Flavin Architects to envision a modern house on a steeply sloped site overlooking the Annisquam River in Cape Ann, MA. The home's linear layout is oriented parallel to the contours of the hillside, minimizing site disturbance. The stacked massing and galvanized steel detailing of the home recall the industrial vernacular of the Gloucester waterfront, and the dark color helps the house settle into its wooded site.
This new house is located in a quiet residential neighborhood development founded in the 1920's. The neighborhood is in transition, and new larger homes are replacing the original modest-sized houses. Our design is intended to exist harmoniously with its traditional neighbors, with elements like divided lite windows and hip roofs reflecting traditional design in the area.
This sensitively sited house was designed by Robert Coolidge, a renowned architect and grandson of President Calvin Coolidge. The house features a symmetrical gable roof and beautiful floor to ceiling glass facing due south, smartly oriented for passive solar heating. Situated on a steep lot, the house is primarily a single story that steps down to a family room.

We started working with Colin and team on our mid century modern renovation in 2021. Working with the flavin team is an absolute pleasure, they are highly professional and quickly developed a shared vision for the project with us. They listen to our ideas and work them into a coherent design for the house that is respectful to original architecture while bringing it to the 21st century. We are looking forward to continuing our work with them in 2022!

This group, specifically Heather Souza, strung me along for weeks before declining my home renovation because "their current workload couldn't accommodate it." This is something they should clearly have known and been able to communicate much sooner. I have lost almost 2 months on a huge undertaking because of this, and will likely need to extend my current lease, meaning even more money out of my pocket. These folks are not to be trusted.
