The most sustainable architecture is that which lasts and CAST is building a legacy of high-performance, enduring buildings. For us, responsible resource management throughout the building's lifecycle, working with climate and site to shape the design, and focusing on the best available building science and details to refine the building's performance are key to resilient, durable, and sustainable architecture.
It means incrementally increasing the number of households and types of housing in neighborhoods that already exist. The climate impacts of sprawling, car-dependent neighborhoods are well established. Yet current land-use policies continue to reinforce a fossil-fuel dependent pattern by zoning land, with segregated uses, at a very low density.
CAST is one of the region's leading voices for abundant and affordable housing choices. We have been advocating for backyard cottages-accessory dwelling units (ADUs)-since Seattle first considered them citywide in 2009 and our Cedar Cottage is one of ten cottage designs pre-approved by the City of Seattle.
CAST creates compelling spaces that enrich lives with a blend of thoughtful design, sustainable practices, and innovation. We worked with Stefan Hampden from CAST to design a master suite in our attic. Stefan proposed two designs within our limitations (budget, keeping the house in the vein of its original architecture, considering the way we live and what we like to have as features in our home) and worked steadfastly with us to tweak our chosen design until it was exactly what we wanted. He made several very detailed, complex alterations to the design to satisfy some rather challenging customer requirements and we are extremely happy with the outcome of his entire design. Having worked with CAST over the last several years, I would describe the group as a small, but mighty firm possessing talent, vision, and approachability all with an eye on the budget. They possess that rare ability to make the experience fun and agreeable, yet still have a very keen eye on details both small and large. With CAST, feedback and questions are genuinely heard, carefully thought through, and very interesting solutions are always presented.
