EcoSystems Design is a Permaculture and architecture design consulting firm based in the Central Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Using the principles of Permaculture, or permanent sustainable agriculture and livelihoods, ESD creates edible forest gardens integrated with energy productive buildings and food productive greenhouses for year around, local food abundance.
We have been teaching and designing permaculture systems since the mid-1980s. We offer comprehensive site analysis, guidance in keeping with client's goals, base mapping, detailed plant selection and layout, keyline and permaculture-informed site designs as well as solar building and greenhouse design.
We feed plants by feeding the life in the soil. Recognizing the amount of unnecessary labor that digging requires, as well as its harmful effects on soil structure and micro-fauna populations, we instead choose to build soil naturally by providing a continuous supply of organic matter. This organic matter, applied seasonally as mulch, provides weed suppression, moisture retention, erosion control and food for the micro-life found in the soil.
Complementing Keyline's water storage system is a uniquely remarkable soil building method that enables the rapid conversion of depleted subsoils into rich, living topsoil. Keyline soil conditioning consists of two primary components - non-inversion tillage (aka subsoiling) and appropriately timed high-density grazing.
