Without a spark arrester rain top rainwater accumulates on the smoke shelf, mixes with creosote in the chimney and turns into a highly corrosive acid. It then attacks the mortar joints on the back wall of the fireplace. The rain water and creosote mixture will cause your damper to rust. Not only will a top keep the rain out, it can also keep out birds, squirrels, and other varmints, as well as leaves and debris.
Mark & Holly are the best! Holly is very helpful and knowledgeable about every aspect of the fireplace, chimney and wood stoves. She helped us figure out what we needed and got us scheduled. We had an emergency and she was very accommodating in getting us rescheduled. When Mark came out he was very polite and very helpful and clean in doing everything that needed to be done.

Excellent service! Holly made scheduling incredibly easy and explained the process in detail. Mark was professional and very thorough. He cleaned and inspected our chimney and followed all COVID safety measures- he even left a coloring book for our little one.

Fantastic! Mark and Holly are a great team! I love that The British Brush specializes in cleaning ONLY and they do not try to upsell unnecessary repairs or new inserts - just a simple, honest sweep with a detailed condition report provided with your receipt. Mark is very knowledgeable and can answer most any questions about safety or proper use of your stove or open fireplace. He also took extra care lay drop cloths to ensure cleanliness. We've been working with Mark and Holly for many years. We burn a lot of wood to heat our home and it's comforting to know that it's cleaned correctly each time we have Mark out. He gets on the roof and actually looks down the chimney to inspect unlike some companies that try to clean and inspect from the inside of the stove.

British Brush as as been our chimney sweep for 11 years and we already have our appointment for 2020. Mark and Holly run a great small business with wonderful customer service and professionalism.
Mark is always on time and gets right to work. He takes great care in keeping things clean - putting down plastic and using a very good filter on his vacuum. He's extremely thorough in his inspection and cleaning. Since they don't actually do repairs, you know that if Mark says something needs to be done it really needs to be done and if it's something minor he'll let you know that too.

This review is long overdue and I apologize for that. Mark and Holly were a pleasure to coordinate with. Holly effortlessly made the appt and Mark showed up right on time. He was polite, efficient and left the living room cleaner than before. He also made notes of the things we should consider doing in the few winters and gave recommendations. It was a delightful experience and I will not go to any other chimney sweep. Grateful for their service and skills.

British Brush has taken care of our chimney since the mid-90's. We will not use anyone else and have referred their company to our friends and neighbors. The owners, Mark and Holly, are responsive and detailed. Mark has come once a year since we purchased our house years ago. He is always on time, will work with your schedule, and makes sure your house is as clean (if not cleaner) than when he arrived and your fireplace and chimney are pristine. A few years ago, he mentioned that our interior bricks above the firebox were starting to get loose and in ill-repair - and suggested we have it looked
